　九段坂・牛が淵の碑　　葛飾北斎
葛飾北斎は、江戸本所に生まれる。その作画領域は極めて広く、独特の高い芸術性を示しているが、寛政末頃から亨和頃にかけて西洋画の技法を取り入れた、いくつかの風景版画を描いている。この画は画題と落款の平仮名文字を横に寝かせて、左書きにし、画面に入れたシリーズの最も代表的なものの一つである。右側の黄土色の急な坂は九段坂で、かっては”九段”のゆるやかな段がついていたという。この坂道に面して石垣と長屋塀の武家屋敷があり、坂道には人や家々などの陰が描かれている。その左の濃緑色の崖はさらに高く誇張し、画面の左半分は、はるばると遠景を見通す変化に豊んだ斬新な構図となっている。この画の特徴は樹木や崖に描線を用いず、陰影をつけて立体感を表わそうとしているところである。左の崖は上方が千鳥が淵、下は牛が淵、その中間を左に入る道は田安門に続き、現在は武道館への入口となっている。空には夏雲がもくもくと湧き上がっていて、すべてが目新しい西洋風の写生的空間表現となっている。

　　    Kudanzaka・Ushigafuchi       Katsushika Hokusai
Katsushika Hokkusai(1760-1849) was born in the Honjo section of Edo (now Tokyo).He produced a wide variety of art pieces which incorporated his unique sense of aesthetics.His woodblock prints from the end of the Kansei period to the beginning of the Kyowa period (around 1800) were influenced by Western art,which was a radical departure for Japanese art.This print is one of his most typical,charabterized as it is by the title and the artist's name written on  their side in hiragana and running from left to right.
The steep,obher slope on the right-hand side is Kudanzaka ("slope with nine steps"),which once had nine gently sloping  steps.A Bukeyashiki (samurai's dwelling ) with stone walling and Nagayabei (Japanese-style hedge) stands to the right,facing the slope.Silhouettes of people and other premises are also shown.On the left of the slope is a deep-green cliff,the height of which has been exaggerated by Hokusai.On the left-hand  side of the print is a broad panorama,an original style of Hokusai.
Hokusai used silhouettes for the trees and criff,rather than outlinig  them in derail,in order to give a three-dimensional effect.
The upper part of the cliff to the left of the print is called Chidorigafuchi and the lower part is called Ushigafuchi,The path going  leftward leads to Tayasumon,now the entrance to the famous Budokan hall.
The towering summer clouds,which depict the scene very realistically,are in the Western style  that was new to Japan at that time.
