　旧牛込門から旧赤坂門までの延長4ｋｍの国史跡江戸城外堀跡には、四谷門のムクノキ、真田濠土手のマツなど、その歴史性を伝える特徴的な樹木が生育しています。その中で、ホテルニューオータニ敷地内には、明治時代の伏見宮邸の庭園やスダジイ、タブノキ、クスノキなど巨樹がみられます。
　正面のカヤと奥の通路にあるイヌマキの2本の針葉樹は、年輪の測定から200年以上の樹齢を持ち、江戸時代中期に遡ることが判明し、この頃屋敷を構えていた近江彦根藩井伊家中屋敷に成育していた樹木であることが確認されました。
　千代田区は、かつて江戸城内や大名屋敷の庭園などに多数の樹木が見られましたが、今はほとんど残っていません。そのなかでこの樹木は、ともに天明年間（1780年代）頃から当地に生育していたもので、江戸時代以来の樹木がほとんど確認されない千代田区内にあって貴重なものです。

　　Trees from the residences of the feudal lord of family
Hotel New Otani is situated within a historical area,what used to be the outer moat of the Edo Castle.Its garden features many trees that date back more than a century,of which two of the most remarkable are the Japanese Nutmeg (Torreya Nucifeta)seen directly ahead,and the Yew Plum Pine(Podocarpus Macrophyllus)standing beside the path further on.From the growth rings,these two trees have been accessed to be over 200 years old.Thus these trees are confirmed to have existed from the time this land was part of the residence of the feudal lord Ii family during the Edo era(1603-1868).
 
Chiyoda city,being a historical area with the remains of Ido castle and numerous Daimyo residences,had once been lush with greenery and magestic trees.However,today,trees dating back to the Edo era are very scarce and thus these two trees within the grounds of Hotel New Otani are of particular value.
